The duo “Hors des Sentiers Battus”, made up of Marion Picot on cello and Jean-Baptiste Morel on double bass, will perform at Relais de Poche on Saturday, April 11 at 8:30 pm.
The silent film “Nanook of the North” by Robert Flaherty, presented to the public in 1922, will be the centerpiece of the evening. An ethnographic documentary illustrating the daily life of the Inuit in the Arctic. Inukjuak, in the Hudson Bay, north of Canada, is where the story unfolds. A story that inspired the two musicians. This creation offers music infused with improvisation and varied sonic explorations, custom-written for the film. The listener is transported to a hostile land, at the intersection of vast ice expanses and the humanity of the Inuit people.
Marion Picot and Jean-Baptiste Morel have been the duo Hors des Sentiers Battus for 10 years. Their curiosity and research lead them to create an eclectic repertoire, of which they will unveil a facet on Saturday.
Marion Picot, fascinated by education and transmission, teaches cello. Her diverse influences, her taste for improvisation, and aesthetic blends engage her in numerous unconventional formations. She enjoys pushing the limits of her instrument, questioning it and weaving together different types of music, convinced that they can all converse together.
Jean-Baptiste Morel, a classical trained double bassist and eclectic musician, divides his time between studio recordings and stage performances where he collaborates on various musical projects. He enjoys music from the Balkans, Russia, and the Romani people, and has explored tango repertoire. His desire to break down artistic boundaries leads him to sound creation and improvisation.
A show to discover for the music as well as the documentary!
