In a move to come, Radio France’s CEO, Sibyle Veil, announced a massive and historic modernization project of the distribution of its stations on Wednesday, April 1st. This evolution, initiated in April 2025 with a letter titled “Innovating under constraint,” was detailed to the unions during a social and economic committee meeting held on Tuesday, March 31st. It will undergo an information consultation process over the next three months.
Specifically, Radio France will switch some FM frequencies – the traditional reception mode of France Musique – to Franceinfo or the local network Ici, in order to increase the audience reached by the latter two. This shift will increase Franceinfo’s coverage from 80% to 93% of the population, while Ici will gain two percentage points in coverage, reaching 90% (compared to the current 88%).
“This is a strategic choice of resilience and sovereignty at a time when the information war is intensifying,” Radio France’s CEO stated. “FM is the most robust network when there are extreme weather events, floods, or disruptions in the power grids, as was the case in Spain in April 2025,” she emphasized.
