On Friday, April 24, 2026 at 8:00 pm, the Les Arcades Cinema in Val-de-Reuil, the Val-Mix-Cité association, and the S.C.D Nor (Solidarity Against Sickle Cell Disease in Normandy) are organizing an evening around the documentary “Beyond the Pain” directed by Sara Adjaho.
The screening will be followed by a debate led by Dr. Cécile Dumesnil, a hematologist and pediatric oncologist at the CHU hospital in Rouen.
Synopsis: Sickle cell disease, sometimes referred to as the “pain disease,” is characterized by an abnormality of hemoglobin causing a deformation of red blood cells that gives them a sickle shape. The most common blood disease in the world, particularly in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East, sickle cell disease is the most common rare genetic disease in France (with 13,129 affected individuals in May 2024). It remains relatively unknown, both to the general public and healthcare professionals, to the point of being considered socially invisible by those affected. Some social science studies have highlighted the lack of public policies regarding the disease and emphasized that it is often associated with marginalized groups in the global North. This has led to the concept of the construction of an ethnic disease.
