On April 24, 2026 Monday, March 30, 2026, a performance of Francesco Cavalli’s “La Calisto” was released by Harmonia Mundi.
René Jacobs introduced me to the music of Francesco Cavalli. “La Calisto” mesmerized me with its essence, sensuality, and musical genius. This Venetian jewel, blending fable, comedy, and tragedy, captivates with its delightful melodies. Following our debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2021, I proposed to Pierre Audi to present this grand work for the first time. While initially challenging, this project came to life at the Archbishop’s theater, offering a unique open-air experience. Through grappling with these challenges, I delved into the musical practices of the time, witnessing Cavalli’s dedication to expanding the reach of his music beyond Venice.
The cast of the Aix-en-Provence production included Lauranne Oliva as Calisto, Alex Rosen as Giove, and other talented performers. The performance was led by Sébastien Daucourt, who directed and played the harpsichord.
The program spanned three CDs, each showcasing a different act of the opera. The reimagining of “La Calisto” brought forth a fresh interpretation, adding new elements like additional instrumentation and selected pieces from Cavalli’s contemporaries. This exploration of composition techniques from the 17th century offers a unique perspective on musical interpretation.
France Musique shared further insights on Francesco Cavalli’s contributions to Italian opera, highlighting his innovative approach and influence on the art form.
