Young people are paying more than average according to this new study proposed by Ipsos and Sharesub.

18-24 year olds spend between €59 and €64 per month on their digital subscriptions, which is more than the French average of €54.

They primarily consume: video on demand services at 77%, music streaming services at 66%, and e-commerce services at 40%.

Financial pressure is pushing them to rationalize their wallets: 70% of 18-24 year olds have already canceled or are considering canceling a subscription for financial reasons.

Additionally, 41% practice intermittent subscriptions, activating and cutting their services according to content. Piracy is also on the rise, with 32% of users affected.

Digital fatigue is setting in: 38% report feeling a mental burden due to the proliferation of subscriptions. 58% have already forgotten to cancel a service, leading to uncontrolled expenses. The promise of simplicity of the model is showing its limits here.

Which is why co-subscription is becoming prevalent in usage.

56% of 18-24 year olds are already sharing their subscriptions, and 65% see it as a legal alternative to piracy. A model promoted by platforms like Sharesub, which initiated this study.

What is interesting is that young people are not rejecting subscriptions, but rather finding ways to work around them. Instead of abandoning these services, they adapt their usage through cancellation, intermittence, and sharing.

If sharing and intermittence become structural, the value could shift towards more flexible, modular, or integrated offers. All in the aim of remaining accessible.
