James Tolkan, the actor known for his roles in “Back to the Future” and “Top Gun” with Tom Cruise, has passed away at the age of 94 in New York state, as announced by a family spokesperson and the official “Back to the Future” website.
Born in 1931 in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan briefly served in the US Navy during the Korean War before being discharged due to a heart condition. After earning a degree in drama from the University of Iowa, he started his career on stage, appearing in local theaters. He made his screen debut in the early 1960s in TV series like “Naked City” and “Armstrong Circle Theatre,” later moving on to films like “Three Sisters” and “Stiletto.”
Known for his memorable roles in movies like “War and Love” and “Dick Tracy,” Tolkan’s most iconic role was that of Gerald Strickland in “Back to the Future.” He portrayed the strict assistant principal of Hill Valley High School who wasn’t afraid to put Marty McFly in his place. Tolkan reprised this role in the sequel as well, and in 1990, he returned to the franchise as Commissioner James Strickland, the distant ancestor of Gerald Strickland.
Additionally, Tolkan portrayed Tom “Stinger” Jardian, the commander of USS Enterprise’s air group in “Top Gun,” starring alongside Tom Cruise. While he did not return for the sequel released 36 years after the original film, he continued to appear in numerous movies like “Robo Warriors,” “Heaven Falls,” and “Bone Tomahawk.” Alongside his film career, Tolkan had several television appearances on shows like “Miami Vice,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Cobra,” and “Nero Wolf,” as well as TV movies like “Phil Spector” and “Weekend War” with Stephen Collins.
