Lille Fined by UEFA for Incidents Against Aston Villa
Following the Europa League double confrontation against Aston Villa, Lille is now paying the price for the incidents that occurred. UEFA has imposed heavy fines on the team for the incidents that took place during the match against the English club at Pierre-Mauroy.
This setback comes at a high cost. After their European disappointment against Aston Villa (3-0 overall score), Lille has received sanctions from UEFA for incidents that occurred at Pierre-Mauroy during the reception of Aston Villa.
According to BirminghamLive, the disciplinary sanctions were confirmed by UEFA on Friday following the first leg match on March 12. The French club has been fined a total of €82,750 for five infractions. These include blocking public passages, throwing objects, setting off fireworks inside the stadium, broadcasting an inappropriate message, and a delayed kick-off.
A Bitter Match
Defeated in the first leg (1-0) and the second leg (2-0), Bruno Genesio’s men failed to score in either match. The Lille coach, whose European ambitions were dashed in the round of 16, was criticized for his tactical approach.
Although the opportunity to lift the Europa League trophy this year did not materialize, Lille hopes to try again in the 2026-2027 season. Currently in 5th place in Ligue 1 thanks to an important victory against Marseille (2-1), Lille is in the running for European qualification, level on points with Lyon in 4th place (47 pts). However, they will face a tough challenge after the international break, with the Northern derby against Lens, who are in second place behind PSG with 59 points.
