Donald Trump continues to place his pieces in Latin America and has found, with Costa Rica, a loyal and devoted ally in the region. On Monday, March 21, the United States signed a protocol with San Jose allowing them to expel up to 25 migrants from third countries to the Central American country per week, as reported by the news site El Observador.
“This is a collaboration protocol so that Costa Rica can once again act as an ally of the United States on important issues for our hemisphere. This is a voluntary agreement: we will be able to reject those we do not want, not accept certain nationalities,” stated President Rodrigo Chaves, as reported by The New York Times.
The protocol was signed during the visit to the Central American country by the special envoy of the Shield of the Americas coalition, former Minister of Interior Security Kristi Noem, who was behind ICE’s operations in Minneapolis, the American immigration police. This “coalition,” formalized during a meeting in Miami on March 11, brings together a dozen Latin American heads of state willing to militarily engage alongside the United States in the fight against drug trafficking networks on the continent.
