As more and more people develop a passion for running and registrations for major city marathons become increasingly popular, the city of London may have found a solution.
With the 2026 edition just a month away on April 26, the reputable Guardian reveals that the organization is advancing on a two-day marathon project. The “Double London Marathon” project would feature two separate races, doubling the number of participants. While the 2025 edition brought together a record 56,540 runners, this double dose could potentially see over 100,000 participants taking part.
This project is considered a one-off and is not intended to become a regular event. It has not yet been officially approved, but as stated by the Guardian, it is believed to have the support of the city council to take place on Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25 next year.
Amid the growing popularity of these races, particularly major marathons like Tokyo, Boston, London, Syndey, Berlin, Chicago, and New York, lotteries to obtain bibs have become common. The double marathon could be a good solution to reduce disappointment, even if participants would still be numerous. According to the Guardian, over 1.1 million people entered the public ballot for the 2026 edition, compared to 410,000 in 2023.
Furthermore, the London marathon is a major charitable event that raises millions of pounds for charity every year. In 2025, £87.3 million (€99.36 million) was raised. The goal is for the 2027 edition to boost the well-being and economy of the capital, potentially raising over £130 million (€148 million) for charitable causes, as reported by the Guardian.
