Nicolas Maduro, ousted former president of Venezuela, returns to a Manhattan court on Thursday to face charges related to international drug trafficking. Maduro, along with his wife Cilia Flores, has been held in a federal prison in Brooklyn since January for these accusations.

The hearing aims to address procedural issues before proceeding to the substantive examination of the case. Maduro is held in solitary confinement without access to the internet or newspapers, allowed only limited phone calls with family and lawyers.

Accused of involvement in narcoterrorism, Maduro denies the charges against him, claiming a violation of his constitutional rights due to restricted access to legal counsel. His lawyers argue that the US government’s actions prevent the Venezuelan state from funding their defense. The judge overseeing the case, Alvin Hellerstein, is expected to carefully consider the arguments presented.

Described as a corrupt leader facilitating illegal activities, including drug trafficking, Maduro has been portrayed as a ‘prisoner of war’ since his capture in January. The Venezuelan government has seen public demonstrations demanding his release while his successor, Delcy Rodriguez, attempts to ease tensions with the United States.

After ruling Venezuela for twelve years, Maduro’s authoritarian regime came to an end, with Rodriguez taking over as vice president. The political situation in Venezuela remains tense as Maduro’s fate is determined through the legal process.
