Some journalists at Voice of America have filed a lawsuit accusing the Trump administration of turning the outlet into a propaganda tool by shutting down objective news broadcasts and promoting biased content.

The lawsuit claims that VOA transmissions to countries like Iran, China, and North Korea are now echoing White House viewpoints and censoring news that doesn’t align with administration interests. In response, the U.S. Agency for Global Media defended its decision to align the broadcasts with U.S. policy goals.

This conflict highlights the clash between journalists and the Trump administration, which has favored friendly media outlets that do not challenge its narrative. A recent court ruling ordered VOA journalists back to work after being placed on leave for a year, citing an abuse of authority by the USAGM head.

Instead of upholding press freedom, VOA journalists allege that Trump loyalists control the remaining broadcasts, dictating content and restricting opposing viewpoints. The lawsuit points out instances where critical news is omitted or suppressed to align with administration priorities.

The plaintiffs argue that without editorial independence, VOA risks becoming no different from state-controlled media in authoritarian countries. The administration has raised concerns about taxpayer funds supporting broadcasts that contradict American interests, suggesting a need to align content with foreign policy objectives.

The Agency for Global Media reiterated its commitment to upholding the VOA charter which requires accurate and unbiased journalism reflective of U.S. policies. The lawsuit has garnered support from organizations like PEN America and Reporters Without Borders.
