At the intersection of culture and diplomacy, the Mediterranean Season 2026 promises to be unprecedented in its scope. Launched three years ago by Emmanuel Macron, the event is imminent. From May 15 to 24, Marseille will become the starting point for a gathering that will bring together artists, intellectuals, and civil society actors from both sides of the basin. It will then unfold over five months in around sixty cities in France with the ambition of strengthening ties between peoples. The season will also conclude beyond French borders with events planned for the fall in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Lebanon. Exhibitions, live shows, concerts, debates, literary meetings… In total, several hundred events are expected, all coordinated by the French Institute under the artistic direction of Julie Kretzschmar.

Beyond being just a large-scale cultural showcase, the project aims to be a laboratory of ideas in a region often marked by political tensions and environmental challenges. Julie Kretzschmar has constructed it as a space for dialogue and cooperation, with round tables and public forums on topics that go beyond the artistic field, such as migrations, ecological transition, urbanism, and Mediterranean youth. By involving researchers, academics, and economic actors alongside creators, the commissioner aims to “think about the Mediterranean from a multitude of realities and unique imaginations.”

The multiplication of partnerships between French cultural institutions and those from North Africa and the Middle East is also part of a highly diplomatic strategy to strengthen existing exchanges and see shared projects emerge in the long term. In Marseille, the stakes also include that of influence. After being the European Capital of Culture in 2013, the city aims to confirm its status as a cultural metropolis open to the sea. Among the exhibitions that will kick off the season, the one at Friche Belle de Mai will bring together young creators from art schools around the Mediterranean to signify the culmination of a program of residencies and international exchanges. And perhaps, beyond artworks, begin to outline a new common narrative for the Mediterranean.
