The Israeli army struck the Qasmiyeh bridge in the Tyr district in southern Lebanon on Saturday, March 22. Located on a major road axis connecting the southern villages to the rest of the country, this structure held great strategic importance. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), it was being used by Hezbollah to transport weaponry.
The strike, which occurred around 4 p.m., is part of a targeted campaign to destroy critical civilian infrastructure. “The Qasmiyeh bridge is one of the most strategic axes in southern Lebanon,” noted journalist Arthur Saradin. This was the third bridge targeted in a few days following a warning issued by the Israeli military.
Context: The Israeli military has been targeting infrastructure allegedly used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
Fact Check: The IDF claims the Qasmiyeh bridge was used by Hezbollah to transport weapons.
A Rising Human Toll
On the ground, the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly. Israeli bombings in Lebanon have already claimed nearly a thousand lives and displaced over a million people, as reported by Arthur Saradin.
Despite warnings to evacuate the area, thousands of civilians remain trapped in the southern part of the country. The Union of Municipalities of Tyr estimates that over 30,000 people are still living in the area, unable to move to safety, caught between combat zones and the progressive destruction of communication routes.
