Israeli President Isaac Herzog warned on Sunday against a process of “brutalization” of Israeli society, during the ceremony for the Jerusalem Unity Prize 2026, organized at the residence presidential.
“I would have liked to talk today only about unity,” declared Isaac Herzog. “But, to my great regret, we are living in days when violence rears its head. Alongside him, on the margins of our magnificent Israeli society, a terrible process is taking place: a process of brutalization. HAS”
The president described a “slow and worrying” development, which he said threatens to win the heart of Israeli society. He notably cited the increase in murders within Arab Israeli society, the violence committed by a “lawless crowd » in Judea and Samaria, as well as attacks targeting Christians, Muslims and their religious symbols.
Isaac Herzog insisted that national unity must begin with respect for human dignity. “Even in the most just war, we must preserve the image of God in us, and in each person who lives among us or alongside us,” he said.
The president also seemed to target Itamar Ben Gvir, after the controversial video in which the Minister of National Security appeared facing activists from the Gaza flotilla detained at the port of Ashdod.
“It is forbidden to mistreat inmates, no matter how despicable they may be,” declared Isaac Herzog. “It is forbidden to take the law into your own hands. It is forbidden to attack people of other religions and their symbols. HAS”
Itamar Ben Gvir reacted strongly to X, accusing Isaac Herzog of not being “fit to be president”. The minister defended his prison policy and said he was proud to have put an end to what he called “terrorist daycare” in prisons. “Israel no longer turns the other cheek to supporters of terrorism,” he wrote.
