The “safe place” of Culture Égalité is located at the headquarters of the association at 158 rue Victor Hugo, Fort-de-France. For Clara Damazie-Edmond, a member of the association, the initiative responds to a well-known reality for women during carnival.

In the face of these findings, the association decided to offer this reserved space for women. The objective is to provide a welcoming and safe place for women.

“We know that as women during carnival, we can face a number of difficulties, including something as simple as finding a place to use the restroom in public or a place to freshen up and feel safe in case we feel insecure. This is what led us to propose this safe place, this secure space for women,” said Clara Damazie-Edmond, a member of the association, in an interview with Peggy Pinel-Féréol.

    Targeted Days

The “safe place” is accessible on Fat Sunday, Fat Tuesday, and Ash Wednesday, from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

“These are the peak days of the carnival. Generally, Fat Monday is quite calm in Fort-de-France. So, we decided to focus on these peak carnival days,” said an unnamed member of the association.

By prioritizing these days, Culture Egalité aims to address the concerns of revelers on the days when the crowds are the densest, making movement and access to restrooms more complicated.

    Positive Reception from Carnival Goers

On-site, this place seems to have unanimous approval.

“We passed by the street, and the lady offered to show us the place and that there were toilets, a place to rest. I think it’s a good idea because we are women, and it’s very complicated to urinate in the street compared to men. Here, we are sure that no one can disturb us. There are only girls, so we are safe,” said a carnival-goer.

“I really liked the idea that it’s only for women. That’s great. And especially the fact that we can use the toilets because it’s a bit complicated in general. We always have to consume something to be able to use the toilets. I find that great. Really,” another carnival-goer expressed.

The initiative is praised by carnival-goers in a context where women may be more exposed to risks.
