Iran executed a man on Sunday who was convicted of espionage, marking the first known execution for espionage committed during the recent war between Iran, Israel, and the United States.
According to the Mizan Online website affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, Mojtaba Kian was hanged on Sunday morning after being found guilty of transmitting information related to Iranian defense units to the “enemy.”
Iranian authorities claim he had sent data on the country’s defense capabilities during the 40-day war triggered on February 28 by Israeli-American strikes against Iran.
Mizan reported that Mojtaba Kian had transmitted coordinates and information on facilities producing components related to Iranian defense industries to hostile networks. The judiciary media also stated that a site in Iran was targeted during the war after the transmission of this information.
His execution occurred less than 50 days after his arrest, according to Mizan. His assets were also confiscated.
Since the start of the conflict, Iran has increased executions for espionage or alleged collaboration with Israel and the United States. However, until now, those executed had been convicted for offenses prior to the war.
