An individual opened fire on agents outside the White House on Saturday evening while Donald Trump was inside. The suspect was shot by the Secret Service and another person was also injured in the shooting.

An armed man was shot by the Secret Service near the White House after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement, as reported by American press including NBC News on Sunday morning.

The shooting took place around 6 p.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The man pulled out a weapon from a bag and fired at agents at a White House security checkpoint. Agents on site responded and shot the suspect, who was then taken to a local hospital.

A passerby was also hit by gunfire during the exchange. Their condition was not detailed. Neither the agents nor President Donald Trump, who was at the White House, were injured.

An individual previously known to police

According to NBC News, the individual who opened fire was Nasire Best, a 21-year-old with a history of mental health issues. He was already known to the Secret Service for previous incidents near the White House, and had been arrested in July 2025 for unlawfully entering a restricted area in the presidential neighborhood.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing as of Sunday morning. “The FBI is on site supporting the Secret Service in response to shots fired near the White House,” said Kash Patel, FBI director, on the social network X.

In addition to a significant police presence in the presidential neighborhood, the White House was locked down for just under an hour. “Thank you to our great Secret Service agents and law enforcement for the quick and professional response tonight,” Donald Trump reacted on Truth Social.

The shooting comes a month after an armed individual attempted to crash the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25 in Washington while Donald Trump was present.
