The FC Barcelona won its fourth Women’s Champions League title in history by dominating Lyon 4-0 in the final on Saturday in Oslo, thanks to doubles from Ewa Pajor and Salma Paralluelo.
With this success in the Champions League, the Catalans secure an impressive quadruple this season, after already clinching the Liga, the Copa de la Reina, and the Spanish Super Cup.
The Lyon team, led by Wendie Renard, was silenced by the Catalan midfield and failed to truly compete for their ninth European title as they had hoped. They will need to quickly recover from this disappointment to win the French championship on Friday in the First Division final against Paris FC.
While Lyon reigns supreme in France, they still have a long way to go before they can dominate Europe again, as they have not won the Champions League since 2022.
FC Barcelona, with their “queen” Alexia Putellas, whose contract expires in June and may have played her last match with the team in Oslo, has not decided yet if they will continue to reign.
The Catalan club owes a lot to their Polish striker Ewa Pajor, who has had a history of losing in Champions League finals, having been defeated five times while playing for Wolfsburg and last year with Barcelona against Arsenal. She started off clumsy in the first half but became clinical in the second, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals.
Served perfectly by her midfielder Patri Guijarro, Pajor surpassed her former teammate Ingrid Engen, who moved from Barcelona to Lyon at the start of the season, and beat Lyon’s goalkeeper Christiane Endler to open the scoring (1-0, 55′).
It was Pajor again, breaking through Lyon’s defense in Barca’s favor, who scored the second goal with a pass from Salma Paralluelo (2-0, 69′).
In the first half, Lyon had a chance to score off a corner kick when Selma Bacha found Wendie Renard’s head in Barcelona’s box, but they failed to capitalize.
Cata Coll Unbeatable
Cata Coll was unbeatable throughout the match, managing to block the first shot but was unable to stop Lindsey Heaps’ goal in the second attempt. However, the goal was eventually disallowed for offside, to Lyon’s relief (14′).
The second half was a torture for Lyon after Pajor’s two goals. The players managed by Jonatan Giraldez allowed Pere Romeu’s team, his former assistant, to have fun, especially the sprinter Paralluelo, who also scored a double late in the game (90′, 90’+3), as the outcome of the match was already sealed.
Once again, Barcelona, playing their sixth consecutive Champions League final in Oslo, confirmed their dominance on the European stage.
