Less than a month before the World Cup, the French Football Federation (FFF) has asked the players of the French national team to accept a reduction in their match bonuses for this tournament. This decision has led to confusion among the players.
Looking to make savings, with the French team set to fly to the United States in just under three weeks to compete in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted with Mexico and Canada, FFF President Philippe Diallo has informed the players of his intention to decrease the usual bonuses for this tournament.
While citing the “insufficient” amount of prize money provided by FIFA and the unfavorable exchange rate between the dollar and the euro, it seems to be more of a cost-saving measure to protect the institution’s financial situation.
Set at just over 20,000 euros per player, match bonuses are a key part of major tournaments for the French national team. If they go all the way in the competition, players can earn up to 160,000 euros each.
The request from the FFF has caused confusion among many players, especially considering that these bonuses were doubled four months ago when the team qualified for the tournament. Additionally, the federation recently signed a “mega deal” worth 100 million euros per year with American sportswear brand Nike.
Philippe Diallo reportedly explained to the players that the amount provided by FIFA to federations is “less than expected,” the exchange rate is unfavorable, and the costs of the competition are particularly high.
In reality, it seems that the FFF has been looking to make savings across all national teams for several months in an effort to achieve financial balance, given the concerning financial situation of the institution.
Several budget cuts have reportedly been made since the beginning of the year, particularly in the National Technical Direction (DTN) and youth selections. The U20 team, for example, did not participate in the Maurice Revello tournament, formerly known as the Toulon Tournament, despite being the defending champions.
While no official decision has been made regarding the French national team bonuses, the upcoming gathering on May 28 at Clairefontaine, the final one before the competition, is expected to provide clarity on the matter.
