Foreign ministers of NATO member countries are meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden. The goal is to prepare for the upcoming Atlantic Alliance summit in Ankara, Turkey at the beginning of July. However, the tone and atmosphere indicate that things are not improving between the United States and the European allies of the organization.
Just before heading to Sweden, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized NATO countries that “refuse to do anything” to support the United States in the Gulf. He expressed Washington’s strong displeasure with the statements made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the lack of a US strategy in the war and the humiliation Iran is causing the United States. As a consequence, Germany was punished by President Donald Trump, who announced the withdrawal of 5,000 American soldiers stationed in Germany.
Threats continue to escalate, with the US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth halting the deployment of a brigade of 4,000 American soldiers in Poland and the non-deployment of a battalion of deep strike specialists. These actions, along with previous threats of annexing Greenland and the ongoing negotiations, show the strained relationships within NATO.
There are concerns not only about the actions taken but also about the method employed. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, working to balance European defense needs with not upsetting the American president, downplays the situation as adjustments that were expected. However, updates on each country’s available troops, known as the “cavalry,” are anticipated, with a reduction in US forces expected.
Furthermore, there are discussions about American armament in Europe, particularly in light of the Iran conflict. European countries are feeling the pressure on American weapon stocks, especially anti-aircraft systems. These weapons are crucial for self-defense or for potential purchase and delivery to Ukraine to counter Russian aggression. The recent large-scale nuclear exercise by Russia serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat it poses.
