After more than two months of discreet and unsuccessful negotiations between Havana and Washington, the threat of a military intervention by the United States is becoming increasingly specific. So much so that, on Monday, May 18, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel warned on the social network X that “if it materializes, it would cause a bloodbath with incalculable consequences.”
The day before, the American news site Axios revealed that Cuba had acquired over 300 attack drones with “varying capabilities” from Russia and Iran and positioned them at strategic locations on the island. According to a senior American official, “over the past month, Cuban authorities have requested more drones and military equipment from Russia,” and Cuban intelligence services are seeking to understand “how Iran [has resisted American attacks].”
“Légitime défense”
“Like any country, Cuba has the right to defend itself against external aggression. This is what we call legitimate defense,” reacted the Cuban Embassy in the United States on its social networks, stating that they “neither confirmed nor denied” the existence of these drones, as reported by Diario de Cuba.
