Former Olympique de Marseille player Jonathan Rowe has decided to speak out. Now at Bologna FC 1909, the English winger gave a lengthy interview to The Athletic in which he openly discussed several tense episodes experienced in Marseille.
And of course, it is his account of his altercation with Adrien Rabiot that is causing a lot of talk.
During this interview, Jonathan Rowe revisited the fight that broke out after a defeat against Stade Rennais FC early in the season. The Englishman claims that the story was misunderstood by the Marseille staff at the time of the incident.
“De Zerbi and Mehdi Benatia did not see the first punch that Rabiot threw,” Rowe explained. According to him, Marseille’s executives only witnessed his reaction without seeing the beginning of the altercation, leading him to justify himself afterwards.
In his interview, Jonathan Rowe also described an especially intense environment under Roberto De Zerbi’s leadership.
The former OM player recounted some very demanding training sessions where attackers had very little contact with the ball during long tactical sequences. But it is especially his account of the infamous commando training camp organized in Rome that stands out.
Despite these sometimes explosive revelations, Jonathan Rowe does not completely condemn his time in Marseille. The winger acknowledges learning a lot tactically with Roberto De Zerbi, especially the importance of detail and anticipation in the game.
He also mentions completely adjusting his style of play after moving to Bologna, where the playing style is very different. Today, his choice seems to be paying off as Rowe has already scored 8 goals and made 5 assists this season in all competitions with the Italian club.
These statements will undoubtedly spark a strong reaction in Marseille. With internal tensions already discussed in recent weeks, suspicions of a mole in the locker room, and now these revelations about the group’s behind-the-scenes, the image of the Olympique season continues to deteriorate.
And Marseille fans could still uncover many more tense stories in the coming weeks.
