According to the American chain ESPN, the regular season MVP title will not be won by Victor Wembanyama with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander convincing the panel of journalists.

It will ultimately be a trial run for Victor Wembanyama. The one nicknamed “the Alien” made a mark with the San Antonio Spurs in his third NBA season. While the Texan franchise had the second-best record with 62 wins and 20 losses and the second place in the Western Conference, the native of Chesnay found himself in the running for the MVP title, in addition to winning the Defender of the Year trophy. However, “Wemby” will not be the name announced late this Sunday ahead of game 7 of the Eastern Conference semi-final between the Detroit Pistons and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Wembanyama falls short

Indeed, according to information from the American chain ESPN through their journalist Shams Charania, the regular season MVP title is set to go to Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Chosen by the vote of 100 specialized journalists from around the world, the Canadian international player is on the verge of being named the best player in the North American championship for the second year in a row. Playing in 68 games with an average of 33.2 minutes per game, the Toronto native averaged 31.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.6 assists.

Double win for Gilgeous-Alexander

These performances allowed the Thunder to dominate the regular season and the Western Conference with a record of 64 wins to 18 losses. “SGA” will become the fourteenth player to achieve this double, following in the footsteps of Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Stephen Curry over the past ten seasons. Missing out on the MVP title could be an additional source of motivation for Victor Wembanyama as his team, the San Antonio Spurs, will face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals starting this Monday, with the Texans winning three out of four direct matchups during the regular season.
