After several different designs were studied, the Commission finally approved a pattern representing, on one side, the standing American president with clenched fists and leaning on a desk, a determined face. On the other side, the collector’s item shows an eagle, symbol of the United States, according to a document published by the Commission.

The selling price of the coin has not yet been announced, but equivalent items are offered for over $1,000 by the US Mint.

“As we approach our 250th anniversary, we are excited to prepare coins that symbolize the spirit of our country and our democracy,” said US Treasurer Brandon Beach, who believes “there is no more iconic portrait for these coins than our President Donald Trump.” He mentioned that two other coins, one dollar and one ounce of gold (about 31 grams), are also under consideration.

In late February, the CCAC (Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee), another committee responsible for providing advisory opinions on new coin projects, had declined to include the review of the coin representing Donald Trump on its agenda.

“None of the countries in the world have struck coins bearing the image of a democratically elected leader during their mandate since the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States in 1776,” commented CCAC member Donald Scarinci. “Only nations ruled by kings or dictators feature their leader’s image on their coins,” he added.
