The price of cinema tickets varies from one theater to another, as revealed by a study conducted by Que choisir ensemble. The survey was carried out at about ten establishments in the Puy-de-Dôme department.

Before, people would go to the cinema simply out of desire. Now, access requires a few extra euros. In 2025, the price of a standard cinema ticket ranged from 5.50 euros in the Ambert and Thiers regions to 12.90 euros in Aubière, in Puy-de-Dôme. This higher-than-average rate, compared to the national average of 11.30 euros, has left moviegoers feeling dissatisfied. A moviegoer mentioned, “There is a wide range of films available, so the choice is significant. However, it is a bit expensive.” Another member of the audience added, “There are four of us. We pay 55 euros. It’s not insignificant. For a large family, going to the movies is not easy.”

To continue enjoying this leisure activity, fans of the silver screen are finding ways to save money and turning to the cheapest establishments, such as the Paris or Capitole theaters in Clermont-Ferrand. One moviegoer expressed, “That’s why we come here. The price difference is significant.” A spectator highlighted, “With the senior card, the ticket is 6.90 euros.” Another person specified, “In Cournon-d’Auvergne, on Mondays, the ticket is 4 euros for the entire day, even in the evening. Some cities are making efforts and that is very good.”

The difference in ticket prices can be explained by the lower rent in rural areas compared to cities, as well as the genre of films shown, whether blockbusters or art-house films, which also affects prices. Daniel Bideau, president of Que choisir ensemble, emphasized, “We have the Capitole theater, which also shows art and experimental films. There are also Les Ambiances in Clermont-Ferrand, which have this label. The prices are much more affordable than in other cinemas. This does not explain the average price, which is around 10.50 euros and goes up to 12.90 euros in a cinema on the outskirts of Clermont.”

In their study, Que choisir ensemble gave a red card to the Pathé Aubière theater. In addition to having the highest prices, no discounts are offered to seniors.
