Deputies from the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office fatally shot a 41-year-old man in the Village of Summit Thursday morning, March 19, law enforcement officials said.
Waukesha County deputies became involved in a vehicle chase that started in Jefferson County, with a driver who “possibly had felony warrants for their arrest,” Waukesha County Sheriff Eric J. Severson said a news conference.
A Waukesha County deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver took off. During the pursuit, the vehicle became disabled in a field near Highway 67 north of Highway 18, and an armed man got out of the vehicle and “displayed a handgun,” Severson said.
Deputies “responded by using deadly force,” Severson added. First responders gave emergency medical assistance, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
No deputies were injured in the incident.
Severson said two deputies were involved in the incident. One deputy has 20 years experience in law enforcement, the other five years.
Severson did not state if the deputies have been placed on administrative duty and did not take questions at the news conference.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, with the help of the Wisconsin State Patrol and state crime lab, is investigating the incident.
As of 4 p.m., the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s website notes that Highway 67 is closed between North Griffith Road and Whitaker Lane.
