The buzzing of a Shahed drone, then impact. Kiev (Ukraine) was under the Russian firestorm on the night of May 13-14. In 48 hours, Moscow (Russia) launched 1,500 drones and over fifty missiles, according to the Ukrainian air force. The anti-aircraft defense failed to intercept them all.
In the heart of the capital, a building was hit. Nine floors and 18 apartments were destroyed in an instant. “A missile came from below. I was in the hallway at that moment, it exploded and I was thrown backwards,” recounts an injured man, still stunned by the explosion. Caught in their sleep, other residents were trapped under the thick blocks of concrete. Rescuers tried to free them with the help of locals. “I heard a woman’s cry as a last hope. I rushed to her and started digging in the rubble. She was trapped under a concrete slab,” tells a young man.
At least 16 people were killed and around forty injured in the massive attack, one of the worst since the beginning of the war. Russia resumed its offensive, ending a very short three-day ceasefire. For the residents, there has been no lasting truce for over four years. “This ceasefire was just a bluff. We have heard this kind of declaration from Putin before. We cannot trust him. The war continues and it is treacherous,” criticizes Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kiev.
Peace talks between Kiev and Moscow are at a standstill, suspended since the start of the war in the Middle East.
