In the UEFA Champions League, surprises and dramatic twists are a common sight every year. However, this season’s round of 16 matches may not have been the most uncertain of the decade, even though Sporting’s Portuguese team clearly stole the spotlight with their remarkable turnaround. After a 3-0 defeat in the first leg against Norway’s impressive Bodo Glimt, Rui Borges’ men overturned the tie in their favor by winning 5-0 at home.
Several forwards stood out, including Luis Suarez, Francisco Trincão, and Pedro Gonçalves. Still, the focus is on the defensive solidity of the Portuguese team, led by Gonçalo Inácio and Maximiliano Araujo. Both Sporting defenders earned a spot in the best XI for the round of 16 second leg, alongside goalkeeper Juan Musso, who stood in for Jan Oblak at Atlético and performed exceptionally against Tottenham. Matvey Safonov also deserves recognition for his outstanding performance against Chelsea, even though he did not make the final XI.
Abdukodir Khusanov, despite being on the losing side, delivered a sensational performance against Real Madrid. The former Lens player faced multiple threats from the Madrid waves. Another standout was Josip Stanisic from Bayern Munich, who had a tough game against Atalanta playing as a right back.
In the midfield, Aurélien Tchouameni showcased his excellent form for Real Madrid against City, excelling in both defensive and offensive duties. Dominik Szoboszlai complemented the pairing by commanding the game against Galatasaray, scoring the opening goal with his left foot. Moving up the pitch, Eberechi Eze played a vital role in Arsenal’s victory over Leverkusen, scoring a spectacular goal. Raphinha, on the other hand, put on a flawless display against Newcastle, warranting a perfect 10/10 rating.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia impressed against Chelsea, scoring the opening goal and tormenting Mamadou Sarr. Harry Kane secured the last spot in the team after another stellar performance against Atalanta, showcasing his impact on Bayern Munich’s gameplay.
