One dead, one injured in Route 50 collision

    WOOD COUNTY, W.Va. (WTAP) – UPDATE 5/13/2026 10:08 P.M.

    The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that occurred Wednesday at the intersection of Route 50 and Progress Ridge Road.

    Deputies arrived on scene to find a collision involving a blue Dodge Dakota pickup truck and an eastbound semi-truck.

    The driver of the Dodge Dakota, identified as Thomas Johnson of Progress Ridge Road, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s department.

    The passenger, Jeremiah Johnson, also of Progress Ridge Road, suffered severe injuries. Emergency crews extracted him from the vehicle before a Life Flight helicopter transported him to Charleston Area Medical Center.

    The initial investigation indicates the Dodge Dakota was attempting to turn onto Route 50 from Progress Ridge Road when it was struck by the eastbound commercial vehicle.

    The identity of the semi-truck driver is being withheld at this time pending further investigation.

    ORIGINAL STORY:

    One person was flown to the hospital after a rollover crash on Route 50 Wednesday afternoon.

    All lanes have been re-opened along Route 50 after being closed for about nine hours due to a two-vehicle crash.

    Route 50 was down to one lane Westbound, but both lanes eastbound were open after the initial clean-up.

    Wood County Dispatch said a call for a tractor-trailer rollover came in at 12:18 Wednesday afternoon.

    Two trucks were involved, one semi and one smaller truck. The crash happened near Progress Ridge Road.

    The number of people involved and their conditions are unknown at this time.
