In Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, the DÉMOS program is changing the daily lives of children who are distant from cultural practices. Led by the Philharmonie de Paris, this free program focuses on classical music to develop more than just artistic skills.

DÉMOS, which stands for “Musical and Orchestral Education Device with Social Vocation”, is aimed at children who have little or no access to culture. The clear objective is to allow them to join an orchestra and practice music over a period of three years.

“This is a program initiated by the Philharmonie de Paris that allows children who are often distant from cultural institutions to practice classical music in an orchestra,” explains Christian Jarczak, a social program coordinator.

Instruments are provided, and the lessons are free. The program’s total accessibility is designed to overcome social barriers.

Beyond musical practice, the program influences the personal development of children. Taking the stage, playing in a group, progressing together are experiences that shape them.

“It has given me confidence. We are taught not to be ashamed on stage,” says a young participant.

Working in an orchestra requires listening, coordination, and discipline. These are transferable skills in academic and personal paths.

The program goes beyond the artistic realm and directly impacts family dynamics.

“Some children face difficulties at school. But once at home, all they want to do is practice their instrument,” observes Christian Jarczak.

This commitment values the children and strengthens their self-esteem. Pride becomes a driving force.

Music, singing, dancing: DÉMOS offers a comprehensive approach. According to Damien Dreux, a dancer, these practices also help learn to focus and express themselves differently.

This is a shared observation from Nour Lakis, coordinator in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, who emphasizes the collective dimension of the project and its local roots.

In the long run, the orchestra formed over three years becomes a symbol of achievement for the young participants.

In Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, DÉMOS aligns with a policy of access to culture and inclusion. The program exemplifies the role of artistic projects in social cohesion.

The model is based on a simple principle: making culture accessible to reveal potentials.
