French politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon suggested naming a new aircraft carrier “France Insoumise” to evoke fear in adversaries. He made this statement at a meeting on Wednesday evening, clarifying that it was meant as a joke. Emmanuel Macron, however, announced that the carrier replacing the Charles de Gaulle would be named “France Libre.” Mélenchon jokingly said that a better name would be “France Insoumise” to instill fear in opponents. He quickly added that it was a joke to reassure military personnel. Mélenchon also pointed out that Macron’s announcement coincided with the anniversary of the Commune starting on March 18, 1871.

On a more serious note, Mélenchon mentioned that if he could choose the name of the future aircraft carrier, he would name it “Philippe Leclerc,” citing Leclerc’s defiance towards Pétain, his involvement in historical events such as the Koufra oath, the Normandy landings, and his entry into Hitler’s eagle’s nest. He expressed his admiration for Leclerc’s career but regretted the period he spent in Indochina. Macron unveiled the name of the future French aircraft carrier during a visit to Indret near Nantes, explaining that it was a tribute to “the French spirit, a spirit of resistance to remain free.”
