The French Air and Space army conducted a large-scale operation named Poker at the dawn of spring. This operation, carried out by the Strategic Air Forces (FAS), aimed to simulate a nuclear air raid.
The operation involved more than forty aircraft, including Rafale B from the 4th Fighter Squadron based in Saint-Dizier and A330 MRTT “Phoenix” from the 31st Strategic Air Refueling and Transport Squadron in Istres. Other resources such as the E-3F AWACS were also utilized for tactical analysis, along with additional fighters for escort duties.
To simulate a nuclear air raid, the Rafale B aircraft carried a scale model of the ASMP-A nuclear missile. The operation involved various stages such as power-up, low-altitude penetration, and a simulated weapon release. The MRTT refueling aircraft provided strategic support to the fighters for reaching the simulated target area.
The exercise took place across the French sky, covering regions from Brittany to the Massif Central, and extending over the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. This operation is part of the approximately 70 annual exercises organized by the FAS, with some conducted more discreetly. The Poker operation, held four times a year, remains one of the most significant exercises involving Air Force specialists and conventional units. This maneuver aims to enhance France’s credibility and showcase the high level of expertise of the French Air and Space army.
