Olivier Dimet agrees, “There is a sense of disappointment. It was a close call, like in all the games since the start of the series. We knew Marseille had no choice, they would give everything to stay alive.”
Domination scenario
The affair had initially started well, with the Boxers first establishing a form of dominance, suffocating the Spartiates, before miraculously not conceding a goal in a three-on-five situation. Then Bordeaux resumed their advance, Marseille’s goalkeeper Libor Kasik making numerous miracles to keep the opportunity at bay. It finally arrived when Nick Pageau found the top corner just before the half-hour mark (0-1). A turning point in the evening in retrospect.
It all then collapsed for the Boxers, who were caught off guard by two long-range shots from Bobbo Petersson (39th), who redeemed himself from his fatal turnover the previous night in sudden death, and then Elias Ruusu (46th). And what followed? A continuous dominant performance, despite the power-play situations that occurred, such as veteran Teddy Da Costa (40 years old), potentially playing his final career match, being excluded for the last five minutes.
> “We came to Marseille to at least secure a victory. We did it.”
“We lacked efficiency and clarity to make the right choices,” notes Olivier Dimet. “Especially since there isn’t much space and we are up against a very large goalkeeper who is delivering big performances.”
However, this defeat is not a deterrent for the Boxers, who had already done the job on Tuesday by winning a match in Marseille. A final 4-0 victory would certainly not have truly reflected the series. “We still lead 3-1,” reminds Olivier Dimet. “We came to Marseille to secure at least one victory. We did it. Now, we focus on what’s ahead.” The fifth match, set for Saturday night, promises to be particularly intense considering the numerous fights that marked the final seconds. That’s also what playoffs are about.
