Kamikaze Drones, Robots, and AI: In Ukraine, Technological Warfare Accelerates… and Saves Lives

The war in Ukraine is “coming to an end.” This statement from Vladimir Putin may seem perplexing, especially as the ceasefire for the commemorations of May 8, 1945, was not respected this weekend. While the front lines are stalled, the technological war is in full swing, ushering in a new era of combat. Plunge into the world of robot warfare in Ukraine.

Snow, a Frenchman, serves in the 426th regiment of unmanned systems of the Ukrainian Marines. He describes himself as a pilot of kamikaze fixed-wing drones, used to target infrastructure, logistics lines, or personnel within a range of 20 to 150 kilometers.

The use of drones in warfare is economically advantageous and constantly evolving technologically. Both sides are trying to replicate and adapt each other’s technological advancements in drone warfare. The battlefield is filled with drones around their positions, leading to exchanges and adaptations of drone technology.

In the kill zone near the front lines, robots are being used for logistical purposes, reducing the risk to human lives. Large drones are even utilized to deliver supplies like food, water, and medical provisions to soldiers on the ground.

Russian forces also employ robots, with multifunctional capabilities, including being used as combat robots or logistics support. However, issues related to precision and connectivity remain challenges for these Russian robots, making them vulnerable to signal interference.

The Ukrainians are experimenting with humanoid robots, but simpler and more cost-effective robots are preferred due to the protracted conflict. The psychological impact of humanoid robots in warfare is acknowledged, but the focus remains on saving lives and using robots effectively in combat situations.

From January to March of this year, the Ukrainian army conducted 22,000 missions utilizing robots, translating into potentially 22,000 lives saved, as noted by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
