Strasbourg’s Racing Club ended the season on a low note. Held to a draw by Angers on Sunday evening (1-1), Strasbourg will not be competing in any European tournaments next season, which was their main goal last summer. The team was caught out by the limitations of a squad that was not deep enough to compete in multiple competitions.

The contrast between the expectations at the start of April and the outcome of the 2025-2026 season will be significant in Alsace. Strasbourg had been racing towards European qualification spots in the league, the French Cup, and the Conference League, but the strain of trying to excel in all three competitions left them with no successes.

After their draw with Angers, Racing will finish just outside the European spots in the league, potentially ending up in eighth place in Ligue 1 with 53 points if they win against Brest on Wednesday and Monaco on Sunday. They also missed out on reaching the finals in both the French Cup, losing to Nice (2-0), and the Conference League, falling to Rayo Vallecano (1-0, 1-0). None of the club’s objectives were achieved: neither securing European qualification as planned at the start of the season, nor winning a trophy along the way.

Context Note:

This article discusses the disappointing end to the season for the Racing Club de Strasbourg, which saw them miss out on European competitions despite high aspirations at the start of the campaign.

Fact Check:

The season referred to is the 2025-2026 season, and the goals discussed pertain to Strasbourg’s ambitions in various competitions.

Un groupe mal construit
One of the main reasons for this failure lies in the composition of the Strasbourg squad, which was reinforced with ten new players for over a hundred million euros but struggled due to relying more on young talents than established players.

Le mur bleu se fissure
Injuries and key departures, including the top scorer Joaquin Panichelli and captain Emmanuel Emegha, weakened the team. The departure of Mamadou Sarr and coach Liam Rosenior also posed challenges for the club.

Amidst these struggles, the rift between some supporters and the club’s leadership intensified during the season, with disagreements over ownership and decisions affecting the team’s performance.

Coach Gary O’Neil acknowledged the squad’s shortcomings, emphasizing the need for improvement in team culture, solidarity, and depth as they aim for better results in the upcoming season.
