At the end of the World Team Championships, which he concluded with only one loss in five matches, Flavien Coton saw his world ranking updated on Monday.
Thanks to the semi-final reached by the French team on Saturday, the 18-year-old table tennis player earned an additional 189 points. As a result, he climbed three places to reach his career-best ranking: 20th.
This deserved progression can be attributed to his recent performances, including taking two sets to one lead against the world number 1 Wang Chuqin during the match against China on Saturday. Although Chuqin ultimately emerged victorious, Coton made a strong impression, especially since he had never before competed as a starter with the French team.
In the group stage, he defeated Japanese player Shunsuke Togami (15th seed), and in the quarter-finals, he achieved the biggest victory of his young career by defeating Brazilian Hugo Calderano (6th seed) in three swift sets.
Among his teammates in the French team, only Simon Gauzy also saw his ranking change. He officially becomes the number 4 French player after dropping two spots to 21st.
In the women’s rankings, Jia Nan Yuan is now 21st, while Charlotte Lutz climbs to 52nd. On the other hand, her sister Camille drops ten places to 97th. However, the biggest news on Monday is at the top: 17-year-old Japanese player Miwa Harimoto is the new world number 3, behind the untouchable Chinese players Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu.
