Ministers from Britain and France will co-chair a virtual meeting with their counterparts from concerned countries on Tuesday, May 12, to contribute to a mission to secure the Strait of Hormuz. The British and French defense ministers will hold a conference call to discuss their military contributions to the region, following statements from Tehran warning of a decisive response to their deployment in the strait. French President Emmanuel Macron clarified that France had not considered any deployment to the area.

Around forty countries involved in the conflict initiated by US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February are expected to discuss and define their military contributions to the offensive mission in the Strait of Hormuz. The objective is to safeguard merchant ships passing through the Gulf, with Macron emphasizing a peaceful and defensive approach while the US and Iran, the main parties in conflict, did not participate in the talks.

Amid escalating tensions, Britain announced the repositioning of the HMS Dragon destroyer to the Middle East, and France dispatched the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Gulf. The upcoming meeting aims to ensure actionable steps are taken rather than just discussions, as highlighted by British Defense Minister John Healey. The strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz for global maritime transport, including oil shipments, has been impacted by Tehran’s actions, resulting in disruptions and affecting thousands of vessels and crew members.

The strait remains a hotspot for US-Iran tensions, with sporadic clashes despite a ceasefire in effect since April 8. The US imposed a blockade on Iranian ports starting in mid-April, with negotiations ongoing to resolve hostilities. A recent incident involved a vessel reportedly attacked off the coast of Qatar, with Iran claiming responsibility for the assault on an alleged American-flagged ship. Calls from the US and Gulf nations to the UN Security Council to demand Iran’s cessation of actions blocking navigation in the strait have been met with resistance from Russia, a key ally of Tehran.
