As an iconic couple of the 1970s in Hollywood, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor shook the celebrity scene with their scandalous relationship. Their story might be at the heart of season 2 of the series “Love Story.”

It was August 2, 1984. Sitting at his desk, Richard Burton wrote a love letter to Elizabeth Taylor, with whom he formed one of Hollywood’s most famous power couples of the 1970s. Three days later, he went out drinking with friends and hit his head in a fight, leading to a fatal brain hemorrhage at the age of 58. The funeral took place on August 9 in Celigny, Switzerland. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Elizabeth Taylor, who did not attend the funeral of her former lover, was at her Bel-Air residence in Los Angeles holding a letter written by her ex-husband. Richard Burton had posted it the day before his death.

“A love declaration that Liz Taylor would cherish in her bedside table drawer for the rest of her life. This story of one of Hollywood’s most mythical couples could soon be on the small screen,” as per a recent statement from the show’s creator, Connor Hines.

Their love affair began during the filming of “Cleopatra” in 1963, despite both being married at the time. Their early signs of a toxic relationship emerged during filming due to alcoholism and drug addiction.

Their story continued with turbulent disputes on and off set, fueled by addictions to alcohol and drugs. Despite divorcing in 1974, they remarried in 1975, only to separate again due to conflicts. Yet, their unique attraction persisted over the years until their final moments.

In 1984, Elizabeth Taylor expressed that she had deeply loved Richard Burton until his death. Their transcendental love story remained one for the ages, despite all the turmoil and separations they endured.
