Alton Fire Chief John Sowders said he was happy to receive a $20,553 check from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, compensating the Fire Department for sending two of its firefighters to Louisiana to assist with rescue and body recovery operations in the wake of Hurricane Katrina the year before. Sowders called it the city’s “responsibility†to help after Alton got so much FEMA assistance during the Great Flood of 1993.
Pupils at East Middle School in Alton raised $1,500 for the Upper Alton Business Association’s project to place a bronze replica of the chair used by the “Alton Giant,†Robert Wadlow, next to his statue on College Avenue. Each homeroom at the school collected coins throughout April 2001 to help make the project a reality.
The Alton Belle Casino announced that it expected to debut as Illinois’ first venue for legalized gambling on Sept. 1, 1991. Cruises on the working riverboat were scheduled to start that day, with a two-and-a-half-hour cruise on Saturdays or Sunday to cost $19.95.
