Discussion in Parliament on French Army Budget Increase Resumes

  • Parliamentary discussion resumed on the increase of the French army budget on Monday, May 4.
  • This debate comes as international tension surrounding the war in Iran continues.
  • Political commentator Christophe Barbier provides analysis on LCI.

A €36 billion increase by 2030. That’s what was debated in the National Assembly as members began reviewing the military programming law on Monday, May 4, which includes a budget increase for the French army, currently at €413 billion.

“‘€8.5 billion more for ammunition, €26 billion budget to replenish our ammunition stock, invest in drones, acquire more A400M military transport planes, the return of military service that needs budgeting'”, dissected political commentator Christophe Barbier on LCI, as seen in the video at the top of this article. He also noted the increase in troop training budget to €1.6 million.

Increase in the military budget: We can see that nuclear deterrence no longer protects us from conventional conflict

“We don’t have the means for our military ambition”: is the budget of the French army too low?

The aim is to align with what Emmanuel Macron defined when he closed the Orion exercises. “‘I am here today to tell you to continue fighting to make France a power recognized by its allies and feared by its enemies'”, declared the President on April 30, stating that “‘we are right to continue to adapt to the threat’ of the increasing international environment brutalization.”

“‘We need to adapt, not just demonstrate strength, but project into the future. […] We can see that nuclear deterrence no longer protects us from a conventional conflict'”, concludes Christophe Barbier, reacting to Emmanuel Macron’s statements.
