Ukrainian defense industry reaches a milestone in surveillance capabilities with the enhancement of its FENEK acoustic systems, according to Militarnyi. The technology relies on a passive architecture of acoustic sensors capable of triangulating the position of a target without emitting any radio signals. This absolute discretion allows operators to detect drones like the Shahed models several kilometers away, while the range increases for noisier targets like cruise missiles.

The strength of this solution lies in its ability to counter invisible threats for traditional electronic warfare systems. The FENEK system focuses exclusively on the sound signature of engines and rotors, analyzed in real time by a network of interconnected sensors. Ukrainian forces will deploy 8,000 Octopus-100 specifically designed to intercept Russian Shahed drones as well.

Each FENEK unit is composed of a sophisticated microphone grid coupled with a powerful computing module. Using the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) method, the system precisely identifies the origin of the noise before projecting it onto a tactical map. This data is then cross-referenced between multiple sensors to display the exact position of the threat on a dedicated map interface, providing defense forces with essential early firing windows to protect sensitive infrastructure.

The deployment of these systems does not require an internet connection, ensuring total resilience against jamming or cyberattacks. In urban areas, this technology also finds applications in securing critical sites by isolating explosion or incident noises, reinforcing the role of acoustic technologies as an essential complement to modern anti-aircraft defense.

Compared to Western radar systems like the Patriot, which are often used to protect strategic targets due to their cost and electromagnetic signature, FENEK offers a much more discreet and affordable approach to proximity defense, especially around major cities like Kyiv. This innovation places Ukraine among the pioneers of low-cost acoustic air defense, a field that is now attracting increasing attention from Western armies.
