From May 14 to October 11, 2026, the Royal City of Loches (37) invites the public to rediscover a revisited Middle Ages, fantasized, magnified… that of cinema. Under the theme “Cinema does its Middle Ages”, one of the emblematic monuments of the Loire Valley sheds light on more than a century of images, stories, and symbols that have shaped our collective imagination. From “Visitors of the Night” to “Kaamelott”, this exhibition aims to appeal to history enthusiasts as well as fans of the 7th art.
The Middle Ages occupies a privileged place in cinematographic culture. Over 600 films have taken on knights, castles, battles, legendary heroes, or Arthurian myths “to create a universe on the border between reality and wonder.” This exhibition offers a journey through these successive representations, questioning the way in which the 7th art constructs and transforms our vision of the Middle Ages, in an immersive experience articulated around five spaces, set up in the historic rooms of the royal lodgings and the keep. To enrich this visual and narrative journey, the Royal City of Loches exhibits a rare selection of original costumes and accessories from reference films, preferred by major cinema institutions, including from “Kaamelott” (the series and films by Alexandre Astier), “Joan of Arc” (Luc Besson, 1999), “The Visitors” (Jean-Marie Poiré, 1993), etc.
