Context: The African Football Confederation publicly announced its support for the re-election of Gianni Infantino as the President of FIFA. Infantino’s current term is set to end in 2027.

Fact Check: Gianni Infantino was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2019 and 2023. The FIFA statutes allow for a maximum of three terms for the President of the organization.

The African Football Confederation declared its unanimous support for the re-election of Gianni Infantino as FIFA President at a meeting in Vancouver, Canada, ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress. The decision was made by the CAF members to back Infantino for the 2027-2031 period.

According to FIFA’s regulations, a President can serve a maximum of three terms. Although Infantino officially started his second term in 2023, his initial term from 2016 was not considered due to the corrupt downfall of his predecessor, Sepp Blatter.

The location and date of the 77th FIFA Congress, where the 211 member countries will elect the next President in 2027, are expected to be revealed at the Vancouver Congress. The support from the 54 African Confederation members follows a similar endorsement from the South American Confederation (Conmebol) with 10 member countries.
