The American president, Donald Trump, mentioning the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, suggested that the assailant who stormed the gala he was attending in Washington could have targeted him because he was unhappy with his policies. “I respectfully ask you, why do you think this keeps happening to you?” a journalist asked.
Donald Trump had a ready answer, regarding his place in the pantheon of American presidents. “Well, you know, I have studied assassinations,” the septuagenarian said. “And I have to tell you that the most remarkable people, those who make the biggest impact – look at Abraham Lincoln (…), those who have the most impact, are the ones we target,” he added.
“I hate to say that I am honored by it, but I have accomplished a lot. We have changed this country, and there are many people who are not happy with that. So I think that’s the answer,” emphasized Donald Trump. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was assassinated in 1865 in his theater box in Washington by an ardent supporter of the “Southern” cause, who had just been defeated by the forces of the federal government.
