At 11:26 AM, the Brantley County School System announced on social media that all schools would remain closed on Thursday due to ongoing fire hazards and affected resources in the area. The safety of students, staff, and families is the top priority, and they appreciate everyone’s patience and support during this time.
By 8:30 AM, Brantley County Manager Joey Cason reported that a wildfire in the area had grown to over 5,000 acres, resulting in the destruction of 47 homes with thousands more at risk. Wildfires in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia have been causing more damage and disruptions than in previous days.
One of the larger blazes, the Highway 82 fire in Brantley County, expanded to over 5,000 acres on Wednesday morning, up from 600 acres the day before. This fire has led to evacuations, school closures, and the destruction of at least 42 structures.
In response to the situation, officials have scheduled a news conference for 12:30 PM on Wednesday, which will be streamed live by Action News Jax. Other areas affected by wildfires include Baker County, Clay County, Putnam County, Nassau County, and Clinch County.
Additionally, Brantley County schools remain canceled, and certain areas are under mandatory evacuation.
Residents are advised to stay updated on the situation and take necessary precautions as conditions may change rapidly.
