On Sunday, April 26, Monday, April 27, and Tuesday, April 28, the Marcel-Oms cinema club is returning with its annual “Art and Canvas” festival, dedicated to artistic creation.

In perfect harmony with the artistic events that weave through the alleys of the Painters’ City, cinema enthusiasts are offering their big screen to painting aficionados. Accompanied by expert guides, writers, film historians, and publishers, fans will be able to indulge in documentaries and fiction films each day, opening the doors to their imagination and cultural reflections.

On Sunday, April 26 at 5:30 pm, the festival opens with a classic piece, “Aragon, le roman de Matisse,” a documentary by Richard Dindo, which takes us back to 1941 following Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet to Henri Matisse’s home in Cimiez, above Nice, in the free zone, narrated by Jacques Weber (Fr. 2003, 52 min).

Following an appetizer, the fiction screening begins at 8:00 pm with “Gauguin, voyage de Tahiti” directed by Édouard Deluc (Fr. 2017, 1 h 41). In 1891, Gauguin exiles himself to Tahiti in search of his painting, as a free man, a savage, far from the moral, political, and aesthetic codes of civilized Europe. Juliette Klein will guide the audience during these two screenings.

On Monday, April 27 at 5:00 pm, the documentary “L’énigme Velázquez” by Stéphane Sorlat, narrated by Vincent Lindon (Fr. 2025, 1 h 31), will be shown. Diego Velázquez, painter of kings and commoners, master of off-screen and mise en abyme, is at the center of a cinematic journey challenging conventions. At 8:00 pm, Andreï Konchalovski takes the audience into the mysteries of life and the soul of “Michelangelo” (Rus/It. 2019, 2 h 14), the Renaissance genius, an artist beyond reach, a man in perpetual search. The audience will be guided by the writer, Mika Biermann, lecturer at the Marseille Museum of Fine Arts.

On Tuesday, April 28 at 5:00 pm, “Gustave Caillebotte ou les aventures du regard,” a documentary (Fr. 1994, 59 min) by Alain Jaubert introduces us to the “most Parisian of the Impressionists,” a visionary of modernity with photographic and cinephile effects set to the painter’s brother’s music. At 6:45 pm, “Renoir” by Gilles Bourdos (Fr. 2012, 1 h 47) is screened. In 1915 on the French Riviera, at the twilight of his life, Auguste Renoir finds new inspiration through Andrée, a young and vibrant girl. Dominique Auzel, teacher, publisher, film historian, and writer, will be present among the audience.

At 8:30 pm, there will be a signing session with Dominique Auzel, in the presence of the Oxymore bookstore.

“Art et toiles” will take place from April 26 to April 28 at the Mondial cinema. Admission: museum members and Friends: 5 euros; visitors: 8 euros for the first screening (including 1 euro membership), 7 euros for subsequent screenings.
