A shooting occurred on Monday at the pre-Hispanic archaeological site of Teotihuacan, a major tourist attraction in Mexico. According to local media, a man shot a Canadian national and injured several other people before committing suicide. The Mexican security bureau reported that the injured individuals are currently receiving medical attention in local facilities.

The government of Mexico State stated that a total of six individuals were injured, including four by gunshots and two others while trying to flee or falling in the panic caused by the shooting. Among the victims are two Colombian nationals, a Canadian, and a Russian. The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet responded to a request for comment, as reported by Reuters.

Local authorities also found several items at the scene, including a firearm, a knife, and ammunition. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that she is in contact with the Canadian embassy regarding the shooting at Teotihuacan and that local authorities, as well as the Ministries of the Interior and Culture, are on site. She also instructed the security bureau to open an investigation.

The Secretary of Security of Mexico State, Cristóbal Castañeda, declared that the situation is now under control. Teotihuacan is located about 50 kilometers from the capital, where daily excursions depart for national and foreign tourists. Known for its Pyramids of the Sun and Moon and Avenue of the Dead, Teotihuacan is the most significant monument of the pre-Hispanic classical period in the Valley of Mexico between the first and seventh centuries.
