Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to keep Canadians regularly informed by providing an analysis of the measures taken to reduce dependence on the United States.

“I will not downplay this crisis,” promises Mr. Carney in a fifteen-minute video broadcast on YouTube on Sunday.

In the video, he explains that the close economic ties between Canada and the United States were once a major asset but are now a weakness.

According to him, it would be wrong to hope that the United States will return to the cooperation that prevailed for decades, adding that Ottawa is instead pursuing its diversification plan.

Mr. Carney points out that young Canadians have not experienced a time when the world was stable and adds that the country can draw inspiration from historical challenges overcome in the past.

He cites heroes such as General Isaac Brooks, General Charles-Michel de Salaberry, or Indigenous leader Tecumseh, who defended what was not yet Canada by repelling American invaders during the War of 1812.

His comments come a few days after a majority was formed in Parliament, with conservatives pressuring Mr. Carney to conclude a trade agreement with the United States, one of his last year’s electoral promises.

Federal Liberals have repeatedly stated that they will not sign a bad deal with the United States while openly declaring that investments in Canada are declining. They have indicated that American tariffs threaten sectors such as lumber, steel, and automotive.

In February, the Prime Minister expressed unequivocal support for the war against Iran launched by Donald Trump on behalf of Israel before later regretting that Washington did not consult the United Nations on a conflict that could violate international law.
