FC Nantes on the brink: a must-win match against Brest

Second-to-last in Ligue 1 with 19 points, FC Nantes is on the verge of relegation to Ligue 2. The Canaries face Brest this Sunday in a match of last chance. Vahid Halilhodzic knows: it’s victory or descent for his men.

The Canaries seem cooked. The familiar refrain is more relevant than ever on the banks of the Erdre. 17th in Ligue 1, FC Nantes only has 19 points. Even though it is the worst season in the club’s history, survival is not out of reach. FCN is 5 points behind the relegation playoff spot occupied by Auxerre and still has 6 matches to play. The first will be this Sunday against Brest at the Beaujoire in an afternoon where everything can change at the bottom of the table.

Final on Sunday for Nantes

The most optimistic Nantes supporters already imagine a dream scenario, with their club winning and Auxerre losing to Monaco shortly after. FCN would then be only 2 points behind AJA. Coach Vahid Halilhodzic, however, is much more pessimistic, clearly referring to this match as the last chance. Regardless of Auxerre’s result in Monaco, his men must win on Sunday or risk leaving the elite in May.

« We are now up against the wall, if we don’t win this match, it’s over. Even a draw is not enough », he declared confidently at the press conference. The task ahead is not easy for Nantes. Key players like Abline are lacking confidence. Injuries have plagued the group, like Fabien Centonze this week. Moreover, FCN is the worst home team in Ligue 1 with only 8 points collected and just two wins at the Beaujoire. Under these circumstances, Brest appears almost insurmountable for the Canaries.
