French judoka Léa Fontaine has qualified for the +78 kg final on Sunday at the European Judo Championships in Tbilisi, where Romane Dicko, aiming for a sixth continental title, will now only be able to vie for bronze.
Fontaine defeated Estonian Emma-Melis Aktas in the semifinals and will attempt to secure her first European title in the final against Israeli Raz Hershko, the reigning Olympic silver medalist. The surprise came with Romane Dicko’s loss in the quarterfinals, her first defeat at the European Championships in six appearances.
Dicko, the 2022 world champion, was defeated by the 18-year-old Aktas in extra time, despite appearing to be in control of the match overall. After a victory in the repechage, she will now fight for bronze against Croatian Helena Vukovic. In the -78 kg category, Kaëla Issoufi, making her debut at the European Championships, will also compete for a bronze medal.
